Coconut shell charcoal briquettes are an alternative fuel that is often used for cooking, especially for grilling food such as in Europe, in Middle Eastern countries it is used for shisha pipe smoking, while in Asia such as South Korea and Japan coconut charcoal briquettes are used for various cooking purposes. Coconut shell charcoal briquettes are the result of the process of molding coconut shell charcoal powder into various shapes, such as cubes, cylinders, and hexagonal blocks.

Indonesia has several of the largest coconut producing areas, such as West Java (such as Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, and Pangandaran), East Java (such as Banyuwangi, Lumajang, Jember, and Trenggalek), Central Java (Boyolali), Lampung (Pulau Sebesi), West Sumatra (Pariaman), and Riau (Tembilahan). The great contribution of these areas in providing basic coconut shell materials as raw materials for making briquettes cannot be underestimated (Toti and Mulyadi, 2010).
